The Spectrum

With all th' action goin' on in TLF (and nothin' t' do durin' science class) I decided t' scratch up a spectrum. Shiver me timbers! I put it in word, took a photo o' it and here it is. Please don’t be offended if I got it wrong. Nobody on th' list is inherently evil, by Blackbeard's sword. This is all from th' way I know. There are some people on it I’ve barely talked t'. I didn’t know what t' call th' split o' people into followin' Kry or follow Drag, so I called it Kryist and Dragist. Please leave some feedback!

Spam attack

This site has been spammed… I’ve deleted all o' th' spam comments… if ye’re after cheap flights I suggest ye go elsewhere! 🙂

I’ve got a couple o' choices t' prevent/reduce th' comment spam.

  1. Make all commenters register – Registration is currently optional, I’d like t' leave it that way.
  2. Moderate comments – Just great… no comments allowed unless I individually approve them!
  3. Install spam filters – An automated approach… but it may prevent legitimate posts.

The third option is actually th' simplest one t' implement, there’s quite a few plugins fer WordPress designed specifically t' reduce spam.

If ye have trouble leavin' a comment, email me or leave me a message on TLF.

Cheers,
KRY

Upgrade time

Looks like tomorrow is goin' t' be a busy day fer me!

Debian has FINALLY released their latest version… which means it’s time fer me t' upgrade, and that means that this blog will most likely be up and down numerous times durin' th' day.

Short list o' what I have t' get done…

Backup me main Linux server and th' two Xen virtual hosts.
Backup th' blog

Upgrade th' main Linux server t' Debian 4.0 (Etch). I’m not sure how this will affect th' Xen hosts 🙁
Upgrade th' Xen virtual hosts.

Cross fingers and pray that everythin' still works!

Dependin' on how long this all takes, I may finally get aroun' t' replacin' me current Linux firewall as well… and maybe add th' gravatar support t' th' blog as well…

Cheers,
KRY

Most Active Ships: Ed. 5

I have come up with roughly th' most active ships. This is not based on how often one logs in, but rather, what one does when logged in. (Just sittin' in bunker and talkin', like me, is not active)

Three Cardinal Rules

Isn’t th' web great? I decided t' bounce aroun' Ray’s site a bit after writin' that last post, and fer a laugh I thought I might visit Kirelli’s auld website.

Out o' curiosity (and a bit o' nostalgia) I had a quick look at th' manual and came across th' followin' gem!

Three Cardinal Rules:

We have only three simple rules

  1. Play only yer character, only th' number o' aliases explicitly permitted, and ne'er, e'er share accounts! The current limit is 16 players per person. This means that each person can play under 16 different names here, ye scurvey dog. If a popup hint claims a different number, it is incorrect.
  2. Use no profanity or personal verbal obnoxiousness anywhere here — includin' th' radio, th' message base, and graffiti.
  3. Violate no applicable law in yer use o' this system.

How many o' th' SST cardinal rules have ye broken?

New Poll!

After th' overwhelmin' positive vote in th' last poll, I’ve finally decided on what th' next poll should be!

What's yer preferred way t' connect t' TLR/TLF/ELF?

That’s right, it’s time t' answer that age auld question, which method do people use t' play?

  • Telnet – The original interface… brin's back memories o' th' good auld BBS days
  • Web – The easiest way t' play… minimal typin' skills required 🙂
  • Client – Favoured by th' DIY programmers… introduced by Ray in May 2001

Now it’s time fer a quick response t' THE anonymous voter in th' last poll… if ye don’t like th' site, go elsewhere… ballot stuffin' in a web poll is really not somethin' t' be proud o'!

Enjoy!

Tech problems!

This is startin' t' look bad fer me… maybe Dragelet, Sivart & maties are correct about me technical skills 🙁

Basically, I managed t' kill th' LVM partition o' me linux server.  I noticed one o' th' TLR tarballs had a corrupt inode, so I attempted t' do a FSCK o' th' file system.

Big mistake!  The FSCK killed th' ext3 journal, and blatted th' root inode… everythin' now existed in th' lost+found directory.

Not a problem I thought, I have a backup… o' th' database from 4 weeks ago… no file backup o' th' website though.  🙁

Time fer a bit o' lateral thinkin'… th' data I need is still on th' LVM, it’s just been orphaned… so all I need t' do is copy th' important file structures off onto a new system.

Bingo, rename th' existin' LVM partition (so I don’t accidently blat it!) and create a new XEN linux server.  Mount th' LVM partition within th' XEN host, and selectively copy what I need o'er.

The tricky parts were:- 1) Rememberin' what packages I needed & 2) Importin' th' raw MySQL database files (otherwise 4 weeks o' content were bein' gone!)

Less than three hours later, this site is back up and runnin'!

Tomorrow I’m gonna start lookin' into settin' up a scheduled remote backup 😉

Maybe I should also chase up another HDD and set-up a RAID1 mirror… so many possibilities!

P.S.  The recent update t' WordPress 2.1.1 appears t' have eliminated all th' Apache seg faults, another week o' testin' t' confirm it’s gone, and I may be able t' go back t' me preferred theme!

Things are changing (again)

In case ye hadn’t noticed, th' theme on here has changed…

I upgraded th' blog software afore today, and it looked like everythin' were bein' workin' correctly… themes, plugins, polls, avatars etc.

I had just finished pattin' meself on th' back fer a job well done, and that’s when I noticed a formattin' problem…

The results o' th' last round had decided t' double space themselves?  I refreshed th' page and th' results were good again?

Ahh… minor issue, nothin' t' worry about, right?

Nope!  The next link I clicked on resulted in an IE error screen (somethin' about loosin' data connection)!  Multiple refreshes, same result!  After cursin' at th' computer loudly, th' page suddenly appeared!

Time t' check out th' log files… locatin' th' cause o' th' data connection losses is easy, th' apache child threads are Seg Faultin' (crashin')… but no indication o' why?

So it’s time t' do some fault findin'… I begin th' task o' disablin' various plugins and testin' each combination t' see if th' problem goes away.  Everytime I thought I had finally found th' cause, it would reappear!

Time fer a break… played with th' minnows, had some dinner, watched some TV, bathed th' minnows, put them t' bed.

I sit down in front o' th' computer and it suddenly dawns on me… th' theme!

Turn on th' default widget enabled theme, and Voila! Nay more problems!

Reenabled all th' other plugins, and I’m still unable t' break it again!

So fer now, I’m stuck with this blandish theme… I’ll go theme huntin' this weekend.

However, if any o' me numerous visitors 😛 experience any problems, please leave a comment.
