Is this thing on?

Well I’ve done it!

I’ve rebuilt my main linux box… it’s now a XEN server, and the webserver is now running in it’s own virtual domain. This will prevent me from breaking things when I perform updates (in theory anyway!).

For the last 26 days this site has been running from a virtual machine on my Windows 2003 server. I’ve had all sorts of problems during this time, slow responses, time drift issues, etc.

Version watch

The last article about the different tarballs got me thinking about which versions are running on the known game servers.

Game Version
TLR TLR 0.6.2
TLF SST 2.1.0t
ELF SST 2.1.0t

Now all we need is a list of what bugs/features exist in each version…

Finding SST/TLR tarballs

I’m hoping to find some time this festive season to rewrite parts of my client… turns out I’m not as clever as I thought I was, and the multiple thread approach I used actually causes my client to crash on a dual-core processor! ๐Ÿ™

So I’m creating a virtual linux box to throw onto my laptop, and I’ve come to the point where I need to find the SST/TLR installer.

Finding SST isn’t a problem, librenix.com has a link to the tarball. However I’ve been unable to find an article there that has a link to the TLR tarball? Good thing I remember that Bestark emailed me the location earlier this year! (Thanks B!)

SST V1.8.5 7th December 2002
SST V2.1.0t 20th December 2005
TLR V0.5.9 26th February 2005

** Update 24-Dec-06 – I’ve been sent the binaries for TLR 0.6.0 & 0.6.1, with a note that Ray has approved their release! You’ll need to install TLR 0.5.9 and then replace the starocon & starinit files from the newer version.
** Update 14-Jan-07 – More bug fixes
** Update 5-Jan-08 – Fixed the download links… older versions hosted on this site are only available to registered users.
** Update 25-Mar-2008 – Bestark has combined the 0.6.2 binaries into a complete installation tarball.
** Update 14-Apr-2008 – Changed download plugin. This one adds version capabilities.

New site features

Bored… bored… bored…

Let’s try adding some new features!!!!

New feature… avatars! Currently there’s only a choice of avatars that came with the plugin… looks like they’re randomly assigned to begin with, and frequent commenters get to select their own! The avatar plugin is designed to work with comments, but can be added to a post like this :-

Updated feature… polls!
I’ve found a different polling plugin, that allows polls to be added within a post… the old polls aren’t compatible, so all of those hard earnt results are gone ๐Ÿ˜›

Other features… just a couple to help me manage backups, timezones, etc…

Cheers!

TLR-20061204-6W (TLR Round 10 Results)

Round 10 is over… and my arbitary round numbering system really isn’t cutting it anymore. I’d like to cater for getting results from the ELF training games (if their admin doesn’t mind), so from now on the results are going to be GAME-EndDate-Length. So these results are for TLR-20061204-6W!

Player numbers have dropped this round… come on guys, tell your friends and family about this great game!!!
Perhaps we need something longer than a 6 week game?

Artemis has once again taken the top spots… even with my lacklustre performance this round, our team still managed to do well? ๐Ÿ˜€

Broken blog!

I did it again, I broke the blog by doing a Debian security update! All of this a few hours after finding and fixing the problem that SIVART was experiencing!

I don’t know exactly what broke the blog, I’ve tried every suggestion I could find at the WordPress about blank blog pages.

My solution… A brand new Virtual server running a cutdown version of Debian 3.1 (Stable)!

I restored the blog to this new server, however the blank blog page bug also manifested on this server.

I decided to upgrade to the latest version of WordPress, and my blog is back! (And yes I tried this same step on the old server, with no improvement)

The next problem was how to let the real world see this new server, my ISP only provides me with a single IP address, and I’m still hosting other sites on my old server.
Simple solution, I modified the virtual webhost on the original server to now act as a reverse proxy to the new server.

So it’s all up and running… total outage a little bit over 12 hours! I did manage to get about 6 hours of sleep somewhere in there!

This isn’t the best solution, but it works for now… I’ll review and redesign the setup when I have a spare moment! ๐Ÿ˜‰
