TLF-20070301 Rankings

There’s been a lot of activity in the endless game (TLF) over the last couple of months, and I felt it was time to start capturing the TLF rankings as well.

Part of my reasons for doing this is a bit self serving… I’m quite pleased with the progress of my ships.

I was a newbie when my first ship (MAGELITE) entered the TLF universe. Several months later I got 3 of the KR***Y ships promoted, and once I got the hang of running 4 ships, I began working on getting the next 3 KR***Y ships through the entry games.

I’ve survived being on DBD’s ‘hated list’, and eventually became a member of the ANS/MPE/DBD alliance. That was when control of the ROBOTTT ships was handed to me. (ROBOTTT10 was also given to me, but the ship limiter prevented me from utilising it… DBD borrowed this ship during his fall from grace)

So as I stated before, my progress through the ranks has been very satisfying 🙂

Better late than never… I missed the reset, so had to wait until the next round started before I could get the rankings.

What a quiet round!
Shadows took out the number one position, and his team was also the highest ranked (pretty easy if there’s no other teams!)

Tech problems!

This is starting to look bad for me… maybe Dragelet, Sivart & friends are correct about my technical skills 🙁

Basically, I managed to kill the LVM partition of my linux server.  I noticed one of the TLR tarballs had a corrupt inode, so I attempted to do a FSCK of the file system.

Big mistake!  The FSCK killed the ext3 journal, and blatted the root inode… everything now existed in the lost+found directory.

Not a problem I thought, I have a backup… of the database from 4 weeks ago… no file backup of the website though.  🙁

Time for a bit of lateral thinking… the data I need is still on the LVM, it’s just been orphaned… so all I need to do is copy the important file structures off onto a new system.

Bingo, rename the existing LVM partition (so I don’t accidently blat it!) and create a new XEN linux server.  Mount the LVM partition within the XEN host, and selectively copy what I need over.

The tricky parts were:- 1) Remembering what packages I needed & 2) Importing the raw MySQL database files (otherwise 4 weeks of content was gone!)

Less than three hours later, this site is back up and running!

Tomorrow I’m gonna start looking into setting up a scheduled remote backup 😉

Maybe I should also chase up another HDD and set-up a RAID1 mirror… so many possibilities!

P.S.  The recent update to WordPress 2.1.1 appears to have eliminated all the Apache seg faults, another week of testing to confirm it’s gone, and I may be able to go back to my preferred theme!

TLF Newsflash! Trolls emerging from sewers!

Things are heating up in the TLF world… and once again I’m the target.

This time though, it’s an attack on my character and the content of this website!

I’m curious, what reason would JEEP have for writing his post?  (Hint: Read messages 10827-10830 on the TLF message board)

SIVART is just trying to bait me into joining his trollish behaviour.  I’m surprised he has time to read the message board though, he’s way too busy running those 30+ ships at TLF… it looks like he’s way to busy to even play at ELF anymore (I have access to the ELF history page again)

TELNET!! is a ‘common’ MSS ship, piloted by many.  So I’m willing to bet that NIMROD was actually talking to himself 🙂

Okay, Nimrod I realise you're attracted to me, but most people send flowers
to their valentines... trying to get my attention by destroying one of
my bunkers and a ship may be considered a bit extreme!

And besides, I'm happily married! :P

Lol!
Your computer is obviously infected with the PEBKAC trojan.
I suggest you put it back into it's box and send it to someone
who has a clue.

I'm surprised you even got there while the site was online. Ignore KRY,
he has a lot of convienent technical problems to explain why everything
he does is so very broken. just do what others like I have resorted to
doing, just don't go there and ignore the rants of the crazy krazy.

Now Why would anyone be surprisd that a KRY website does NOT
have spyware on worse on it I just dont know.
I guess thats one way to maybe steal passwords (trojan) or at a minimum
track how many time a machine logs into the game For those of you who
have a static IP address watch out...
A new low has been reached to win the game
But then again it might all be just another Rumor.
(I'll stay away form the site just to be safe)

wel that would explain how he got his hands on the sg1 ships (among so
many others that seem to do his dirty work).
Rumors always have some semblance of truth to them. Theres just no such
thing as coincidence in sst.
I'm sure he'll produce some more fake logs to prove that something did
or didn't happen. not much we can do about that.

Long live MSS!

TLF Newsflash! Strike led by fool!

What a surprise… one of my ships on TLF has been attacked and killed!

The real surprise though, is that my ‘nemesis’ (better known as Nimrod) somehow managed to convince twelve other people to assist him in taking out one of my bunkers and it’s occupant!

The really big surprise of the night though, was the dirty looks my wife gave me as I told her that I needed to spend some time playing SST to rebuild the lost ship.  I’d forgotten that it was Valentine’s day 🙁

So, due to the last statement, I need to put any retaliatory strikes on hold… family comes first, and being on my wife’s better side is second!!! 😉

Oh yeah, here’s the event log I was presented with while logging in (Nimrod will of course claim it’s a complete fabrication, and that he’s an innocent victim).

And finally… there’s only 12 names left on my list.  _DANTE_ left their ship parked in sector 1036720 with no defences, well now it’s missing a hull, a cockpit, atmosphere, etc, etc. 😛

Things are changing (again)

In case you hadn’t noticed, the theme on here has changed…

I upgraded the blog software earlier today, and it looked like everything was working correctly… themes, plugins, polls, avatars etc.

I had just finished patting myself on the back for a job well done, and that’s when I noticed a formatting problem…

The results of the last round had decided to double space themselves?  I refreshed the page and the results were good again?

Ahh… minor issue, nothing to worry about, right?

Nope!  The next link I clicked on resulted in an IE error screen (something about loosing data connection)!  Multiple refreshes, same result!  After cursing at the computer loudly, the page suddenly appeared!

Time to check out the log files… locating the cause of the data connection losses is easy, the apache child threads are Seg Faulting (crashing)… but no indication of why?

So it’s time to do some fault finding… I begin the task of disabling various plugins and testing each combination to see if the problem goes away.  Everytime I thought I had finally found the cause, it would reappear!

Time for a break… played with the kids, had some dinner, watched some TV, bathed the kids, put them to bed.

I sit down in front of the computer and it suddenly dawns on me… the theme!

Turn on the default widget enabled theme, and Voila! No more problems!

Reenabled all the other plugins, and I’m still unable to break it again!

So for now, I’m stuck with this blandish theme… I’ll go theme hunting this weekend.

However, if any of my numerous visitors 😛 experience any problems, please leave a comment.

Back to normal!

Ouch… 101 hours of no internet access!

I still haven’t received an acceptable explanation from my ISP, some upgrades occurred on Thursday with their provider and something failed… No backout plan, no spare hardware, no internet for several thousand Victorian users!

And of course, the upgrade was occuring the day before the Australian Day long weekend, so nobody was going to give up their holidays to fix it (strange though, I was on-call over both the Xmax & New Year weekends!)

New poll: Which games are you active in?

Due to the popularity of the last poll, it’s time to start a new one!

Is there still any life in the SST/TLR community?

  • The number of new players in TLR seems to have dropped off quite a bit, and a lot of regular players have started to disappear.
  • I’ve lost access to the ELF history page again, so I’ve got no visibility into what’s happening over there. The message boards have been quiet lately.
  • As for TLF… there’s a lot of activity going on over there… ship hijacking, returning conquerors (sorry vets), delusional captains, kamikaze ships… the list goes on (and on)!

As another player pointed out, polls can be totally pointless… and exploited!
If you can vote more than once, DO IT!
If you can get an ex-player to vote, DO IT! (And get them to start playing again as well!)

Which games do you actively play in?

Is this thing on?

Well I’ve done it!

I’ve rebuilt my main linux box… it’s now a XEN server, and the webserver is now running in it’s own virtual domain. This will prevent me from breaking things when I perform updates (in theory anyway!).

For the last 26 days this site has been running from a virtual machine on my Windows 2003 server. I’ve had all sorts of problems during this time, slow responses, time drift issues, etc.
