Space Tyrant

As the game approaches a playable release, I figured it was time to describe it a bit. Space Tyrant is an open source game following in the footsteps of SST and TLR. Unlike it’s relatives, it runs in memory and uses a model that permits things to happen in real-time. For example, a ship moving into your sector will immediately cause your display to show a ship has spotted you. At the moment, the game is only playable with telnet, but it doesn’t suffer from the difficulty of having to key in many numbers to move from sector to sector, as each sector has a single digit from 1 to 6 to allow movement. The real-time model affects everything including your radio, so when someone transmits a message, all online ships see that message immediately.

The universe is similar to SST and TLR, with a main galaxy in which all ships start. For every 2000 sectors, there’s a spaceport randomly placed that has a wormhole leading to an 8K galaxy with a random productivity boost. Equipment works a little differently, with most basic functions built-in, like autoscoop, planet locator. Ships currently start with 50 holds and have room for 50 more or one less for every piece of additional equipment up to 5. That’s were things are a little different. You have the option of purchasing tractor devices, combat systems and scanners. These devices add basic capabilities when you add one or two, but when you add 3 or more, additional capabilities kick in. So depending on what you want to do, you’ll need to make the decision of what kind of ship you’ll need: farmer, killer or hunter.

Current state of game includes combat systems, passive scanners and tractor device under development. You can buy them, but they don’t do anything yet 😛

New 800K universe with resorts

If you haven’t been playing for a while, now is the time to try out the game. Ray has just updated the game server code to a version which supports resorts of multiple sizes. This first game, a 42 day game, has the minimum size map that supports resorts, an 800K universe composed of 400K sectors and 400K rooms divided among 25 resorts.
Should be a lot easier to find those resorts. The new code also should make resets a lot more reliable than they have been in the past. I’m sure some have entered the game several days after a reset should have happened, and still got the reset in progress.

Be sure to check things out. The smaller map size should also make the game a little more responsive.

Round 8 is over… here’s the results.
And just for the record, Heat Seeker isn’t me!
I had better apologise to Amber, I seem to have jinxed her team this round… even though one of her teammates was 1st.

Caution: Don’t operate heavy equipment!

Not sure how many people noticed, but this site has been unavailable for a couple of days.

I had been neglecting the maintenance of my Linux server for a couple of months, and accidenly screwed the entire server while trying to catch up… I accidently selected too many additional packages, and while attempting to unselect them I somehow managed to uninstall some major packages (apache, mysql, sshd just to name a few).

I’ve recenly been diagnosed with Sleep Apnea, so I’m blaming this mistake on my lack of sleep and short attention span…

Now what was I talking about again?

Rankings from Round 7 of TLR

That’s it for round 7… didn’t play much this round, and by the look of it we’re still suffering from player attrition 🙁
However, taking a closer look at the scores, it looks like the level of competition has been lifted again!

Too quiet?

Wow, almost a month has gone by, and nothing seems to be going on?

TLR – I’ve barely been able to find time to log a ship in for the current round. The way the round started left my ship in an exposed situation. I was the first ship to log in for the new round, and my ship started off in the 240K region… Not really a problem, until I realised I was outside of the ‘known’ universe size… this meant that the elevators, transport booths etc wouldnt work for me!

NUMBER 52 also reported a navigation bug they found in galaxy #20. Not much info to go on, but I think I found what they’re referring to… If you try to generate an autopilot path from the top half of that galaxy back to the lower part you’ll get kicked out of the game! The weird part of this bug is that your ship remains logged in without any time usage penalty? I was able to duplicate the bug from several different computers & operating systems and in other galaxies too…

SST – Situation normal… it looks like a lot of old farms are being raided… by indies of course.

RL – I’ve been out of commision for the last month with the flu… which is part of the reason I’ve been having trouble finding time to log into TLR.

Comments upgrade

I’m starting to get some feedback on this site, which is great considering it’s not widely publicised.

Being an admin here means I have a dashboard control that shows me all the recent comments that have been posted… but there was no such tool for site visitors.

So I’ve added a new tool to the sidebar, that will show the top 5 articles which have received comments. The number of comments, and who has posted comments is also shown. The color of the poster is suppose to represent the ‘age’ of the comment: Darker colors are recent posts, and the lighter colors are older post.

Enjoy,
KRY
